I find that in general, people who are trying to lose weight talk about being “good” or “bad” in relation to food. They often feel guilty because they think they have eaten something “naughty” which ultimately leads them to binge on what they perceive as unhealthy food.

They have simply developed a negative association with food. This is hardly surprising, considering the “normal” way that people think they should lose weight is by dieting and deprivation. This is drummed into us in the media, by celebrities, our parents, our peers, and with the thousands of diets available. Unfortunately, this approach does not teach us to trust ourselves and listen to our own bodies so we can make positive and appropriate choices with regard to our own health. We think we have to follow strict eating plans and can’t have any treats. If we do we have been “bad”. This is why it doesn’t work. No one likes to be told they can’t have or do something. Who can relate to children who won’t take no for an answer and will simply nag and nag until we finally say yes just to shut them up? We all respond best to positive associations, encouragement and support. In this way we are empowered to make appropriate decisions for ourselves.

There is no such thing as “bad” food. Sure, different foods have a higher fat, sugar or calorie content, but it’s only bad for you if you eat it all the time in large quantities. We deserve to enjoy our food and have treats. Food is not there just to fuel our bodies. We should gain pleasure from it as well and can learn to gain pleasure from both the healthy and not so healthy options. If you are not used to eating healthy foods, you can learn to enjoy how you feel when you are not overfull or too heavy and have lots of energy. Similarly, if you’re not used to treating yourself to your favourite foods, you can learn how it feels to just try a little bit, how great it feels to “let go” and the satisfaction of being able to stop, knowing you can have some again later on.

Natural Eating empowers you to experiment with food, find out what gives you pleasure and enables you to think positively about food. In this way you will feel more in control and start to enjoy eating and how your body feels when you give it what it wants and needs.

My Anorexic Child Is So Angry At Me Whenever We Talk About Food

One of the easiest ways to identify your child’s eating disorder behavior and thinking is she will be very argumentative about food related issues. She will sound defensive and angry.

Your child most likely has always been pretty compliant. She probably did what you asked of her. There may have been times when she questioned you about a decision but she still followed through. This is partly why it is so difficult for you to handle her oppositional behavior regarding food.

I learned something today on a coaching call with a family. I think I knew it already; but I have never heard it so clearly. The conflict and oppositional behavior is hard for your child too. She is not used to herself behaving in these ways. She is not accustomed to “causing trouble” in the family.

Other siblings may or may not have been this way in the past; but not her. She was typically the “good kid.” It is part of her identity to be the good kid or at least one of the good kids. Now everything is different. She has lost her identity as the “good kid” and she doesn’t know how to handle it either.

It’s almost like she is on the outside looking in at this girl she doesn’t know; but it’s her. She doesn’t know this argumentative person and she doesn’t know how to get her real self back. She is lost and scared.

She sees your frustration and anger and it appears to you that she feels the same. The reality is she feels guilty and helpless to act any different in that moment.

She is going against who she truly is on the inside because the eating disorder is so strong. It is telling her what she can and cannot do; what she can and cannot eat and more.

She wants to comply but she can’t because she is no longer hearing her own voice. She is only able to hear the ED voice. Your voice and hers are being drowned out by ED.

You know a lot of examples of this ED behavior. You see it every day so I won’t give specific examples here. Just remember it is not your child talking; it is the anorexia.

Idioms About Food That Will Make You a Real Italian

We all know that Italy is a great place where you can eat loads of super tasty and healthy food..BUT… did you know that in Italian there are so many idioms about food and drinks?

They are frequently used in everyday life, and if you know how to use them you will surprise all your Italian friends. To use them properly may be a bit hard, but with this short article I want to help you understand better how and when to use them.

Okay, let’s start our trip!

The first idiom I want to introduce is “Acqua in bocca“, which literally means “water in the mouth“. A bit weird, isn’t it? Well, when we tell a friend a secret and we want our friend to keep the secret and don’t tell it to anyone, we can say “Acqua in bocca”.

This idiom has a religious origin: it seems it was seen for the first time in 1760 on a newspaper called Gazzetta Veneta. There, an article reported that a girl asked for help to a priest on how avoid telling backbitings. The priest told her to keep water in her mouth every time she felt like she would say something bad about another person. Interesting, isn’t it?

“Giulia! Devo dirti una cosa… ma è un segreto!!

Va bene Laura, dimmi…

Ieri ho visto Luca a cena con una ragazza… che non era Maria… ma non dirlo a nessuno!! Acqua in bocca, mi raccomando!”

(Giulia! I must tell you something, but it’s a secret!!

Okay, Laura, tell me…

Yesterday I saw Luca having dinner with a girl..that wasn’t Maria..but don’t tell it to anyone! Keep the secret!!)

The second idiom is “Tutto fa brodo”, literally “everything makes a bouillon”, which would be, in proper English, “It’s all grist for my mill”We use this expression when we are extremely short of resources or when we want to say that everything can be useful for our purpose.

For example:

Ho venduto la macchina. Non ho fatto molti soldi, ma sai… tutto fa brodo!

(I sold my car. I didn’t make a lot of money but..it’s all grist for my mill!)

This expression comes from rural times: usually a good broth is made with meat, but since it was very expensive, everything else was good to prepare the soup: from poorer parts of meat to leftovers of vegetables.

The third idiom is “Andare a tutta birra (beer)”. In this case we see that we use a drink, and not something to eat. Andare a tutta birra means walk extremely fast, or do something really fast.

This idiom comes most probably from the french “à toute bride (bridle)”, and it was misspelled and translated with the word “beer”.

“Sono proprio felice, Luca sta facendo la maratona a tutta birra!”

“I’m really happy, Luca is running the marathon really fast!”

The fourth idiom is again about drinks, but non-alcoholic one: milk! Non piangere sul latte versato (don’t cry over the spilled milk) is an expression which means that we don’t have to complain about what we did. What is done, is done, as we say in Italian (Quel che è fatto è fatto), and we can’t change the consequences of our actions, so better don’t complain and move forward!

This expression comes from older times, when milk was a quite expensive drink and once spilled, it would have been useless to get crazy.

“Non ho passato l’esame di matematica, adesso come farò? Dovrò studiare altri sei mesi per per quest’ esame… è terribile..e adesso come faccio??

Marco, è inutile piangere sul latte versato: mettiti a studiare e basta.”

“I haven’t passed the mathematics exam… what will I do now?? I must study other six months..that’s terrible, how will I make it??

Marco, don’t cry over the spilled milk: you must study harder and that’s all. “

The fifth and last expression is about onions and clothes. WHAT?? Oh yes, in Italian these two apparently far things go together: Vestirsi a cipolla (To dress like an onion) means to dress smartly. What does it mean? Well, for example, if we live in a place where in the morning is quite chilly, then during the day it gets quite warm and we must stay out all day, then we definitely need to vestirci a cipolla! Better to wear a short sleeves shirt and something warmer over it, then when it gets warmer we can avoid melting down under the sun because of too many, or too warm clothes:)

“Le previsioni dicono che domani sarà freddo al mattino ma caldo di pomeriggio… sarà meglio vestirsi a cipolla! “

“The forecasts say that tomorrow it will be cold in the morning but really warm in the afternoon… I think is better to dress properly not to be too hot or too cold!”

In conclusion, as you see there are so many expressions that are similar in different languages, and I believe this is really interesting and motivating to learn different languages.

The Truth About Food

Finally there is a book about food and its effects on us based on recent science.

This is the companion piece to a five-part TV series of the same name created in conjunction with Discovery Health. The author, Jill Fullerton-Smith is an award-winning filmmaker and producer of BBC science programming, spent 2 years making the series. She and her team worked with more than 50 nutritionists, doctors and other experts from more than 20 universities, research centers and hospitals in the UK, the US, and Denmark.

Questions like, “why does my best friend eat like a horse and look like a gazelle?, Do carrots really help ones eyesight?, can foods really affect libido?” are answered and the answers proven right there before your eyes.

Why so much confusion around the topic of food? Because there is so much conflicting information and many of us can’t seem to make sense of it. As Ms. Fullerton-Smith writes in the intro, “Understanding complex research can be hard going; experts disagree; journalists speculate; and old myths die hard. It seems the more we know the more we have to worry about, and the less sure we are of the truth.” I say “Amen” to that.

Dr. Mehmet Oz who wrote the forward adds this; “If food were merely fuel, we could consume a simple, tasteless liquid and be on our way, just as we full up our cars with gasoline to keep us on the road. But nothing about food is simple. Even the most basic signals that tell us we are hungry or full are confused by a host of psychological and physiological triggers that often make it difficult for us to identify when we need to eat or-more importantly for most of us-when we need to stop eating.” This statement alone might have some of you singing the hallelujah chorus.

The Truth About Food is written as a series of “How Tos.” How To: be healthy, be slim, feed the kids, be sexy, be the best, and stay young and beautiful. To support their ideas they use great photos, sidebars, and “top tips.” These are the little take away gems that you don’t want to exclude in your new way of eating.

During their two years of experimenting they managed to prove that you can lower cholesterol and blood pressure without drugs, (no surprise there), that calcium does have some chops in the weight loss category, and that most people do not need to drink two litres of water per day to remain health and hydrated. Water haters rejoice!

Think of this book as evidence that “foods are powerful weapons in our fight to stay healthy,” as Dr. Oz puts it. This isn’t a diet book but can be the basis of a new way of eating for weight loss or weight gain for that matter. You will learn why certain foods produce certain results in some and not in others. The writing is engaging and the science is easy to follow.

Pick this book up and I swear you won’t want to put it down. It’s that much fun and encouraged even this avid foodie to look twice at what’s on my plate.

Will Changing the Way You Think About Food Help You To Lower Blood Sugar

Are you struggling with weight loss? Trying to reverse Type 2 diabetes? Your relationship with food is pivotal: for better or worse it is going to impact your results. It is in your best interest to ensure the way you eat facilitates your efforts and helps you reach your objectives.

First, you must change the way you think about food. Only then will you be able to make consistent progress with weight loss. Being careful with your food choices is a must if you are to successfully treat your Type 2 diabetes because much depends on the way you eat.

How you eat is just as important as what you eat. You already know a healthy diet containing the following is important…

  • fruits and vegetables,
  • whole-grains,
  • lean meats or alternative sources of protein, and
  • essential fats.

Sensible portion sizes are especially crucial if you are working on weight loss as there is no fat loss without a caloric deficit. So you do have to monitor your calories, even if it is just through estimates.

But your eating habits themselves also deserve your attention. Do you have…

  • a tendency to eat late at night,
  • snack between meals, or
  • drink a sweetened beverage along with your meals?

There will be several poor habits affecting your progress. These are just a few of the common ones. If you change the way you think about food, it should help you limit or eliminate your unhealthy habits and replace them with the type conducive to your goals.

Start thinking about food primarily as sustenance. Your first reason to eat is that you must – not because you feel a craving. There is a difference. Start taking a moment to consider whether or not the need you feel is because you are hungry. Here is a hint: if you just had a decent meal three or four hours earlier, you are not hungry.

An empty stomach is no reason to eat. But your body will send the signal anyway, tempting you to snack on something. Don’t. Start eating when you are hungry and due for a meal. Eating when you are hungry can solve your weight loss problems or, at the very least, stop you from gaining weight. To be fair, it can be difficult to tell at first. That is why it is key to drink water throughout the day. Drink a large glass of water whenever you feel a craving. Afterward, does the urge to eat stay the same or decrease? Many times you will find you are thirsty instead of hungry.

It helps to start seeing food as a way of strengthening your health. The vitamins and minerals found in rich foods do make a difference. Eating well over the long-term will improve your appearance and make you feel great, never mind help with…

  • lowering blood sugar, and
  • increasing weight loss.

Changing the way you think about food is a process. You can start today.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Can Anything Be Done About Food Allergies

May 11th -17th was “Food Allergy Awareness Week”. This is when the public should be educated about food allergies and the concerns about them. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t see anything telling me about “food allergies” anywhere in the papers this year or on TV.

Here are some disheartening statistics about food allergies:

  • Each week, approximately 2 to 3 Americans will suddenly lose their lives due to food allergies.
  • Approximately 6 to 8 percent of children under age 4 have a food allergy.
  • About 4 percent of people age 5 and older have a food allergy.
  • Even by avoiding the foods one is allergic to, about 25% of those who have allergies will still have an allergic attack at least once a year.

Many babies who have allergies to milk and eggs will outgrow the food allergies within a few years but some of those kids will develop allergies to peanuts.

According to NIAD (National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Disease), “Allergic reactions to foods occur when the immune system over-reacts to food proteins, setting off a cascade of events that can range from itchy hives to difficulty breathing, cardiovascular collapse and a systemic, life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis…. And about 30,000 cases of food-induced anaphylaxis occur in the United States each year, leading to as many as 200 deaths.”

If you are a parent and have a child who has a food allergy, it can be very scary when they are at school because a lot of teachers and cafeteria workers are not educated on the seriousness that a food allergy can bring.

Searching out an alternative method to allergies might be a solution as there is no cure for food allergies as of yet. Your doctor might give you an EpiPen or Twinject which is good if you need emergency treatment. If you don’t know what this is, talk to your doctor about it.

There are some alternative treatments that have helped some with their food allergies. Here is a tea that might prove somewhat helpful for food allergies in the long run. You should be able to get these ingredients at your local health store.

Allergy Tea 

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon each marshmallow root
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint leaf
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger rhizome

Combine the water & marshmallow roots in a pan & simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and add remaining ingredients. Steep for 15 minutes, then strain out herbs. For a 50-pound child, give 1 to 2 cups daily.; for a 50-pound child, give ½ to 1 dropperful (30­60 drops) daily.

If you are desperate to lose weight, but you do not know where to start, finding out what you need to know about food for a diet is a very good place to start. Losing weight consists of two steps and the correct eating plan is the one very important part.

Food for a diet:

Any food that forms part of a well balanced, calorie controlled diet is suitable for someone that want to lose weight. It is getting the portions and proportions right is where the problem normally lies. Most of us do not know what a proper portions looks like any more and we also eat too much of certain kinds of food.

What does a healthy balanced eating plan looks like?

  • Proteins are very important as they are necessary as building blocks for your body. Eat mostly low fat chicken, fish and legumes. Red meat must be limited to a few times a week and eat only very low fat portions. You need to eat at least three average portions of protein a day. Legumes are always a very good choice. Remember to always combine legumes with a small amount of carbs to provide your body with a complete protein.
  • Fruit is very healthy, but as fruit contains a lot of sugar, you have to limit it to about three small portions a day. With fruit portion control is even more important because it is so easy to eat too big a portion. A big banana, for instance, can sometimes be very large and will then rather be two or even three portions. For this reason, going slow on bananas may be a good idea.
  • Eat only low fat or fat free dairy products. Keep dairy products to two portions a day. A very good choice as a food for a diet is fat free, unsweetened yoghurt. Use it in your cooking or as a salad dressing. Beware of hard cheese as they are normally very high in fat. Fat free cottage cheese is also a very good choice.
  • Fat needs to be limit, of course. Keep your use of fat to about three teaspoons of olive oil or other kinds of fat a day. You do need to eat a little fat as your body needs it to absorb the fat soluble vitamins. Here is an area where you really have to be careful as fat is by no means a food for a diet.
